Note from The Case Foundation: Congratulations to First Book, the nonprofit to receive the most votes in our August "Give Back While Going Back to School" sweepstakes on Facebook. As the winner, First Book will be awarded a $10,000 grant from The Case Foundation to further its mission and goals. We're happy to share a guest blog post from their vice president of development, Theresa Harnisch. Thank you to all of our participating nonprofit partners, and our Facebook fans for entering the “Give Back While Going Back to School” sweepstakes. A big congrats to our winners: Anderson Y. from Indiana, Valerie G. from Illinois, Alexandria G. from Califnoria, Joy V. from California, and Shelley J. from Maryland. Your $500 gift cards are on the way!

We won the Case Foundation’s Back-to-School Sweepstakes contest on Facebook! As the AcademyAward winners say, it was an honor just to be nominated; we were genuinely pleased to be in the company of outstanding groups like City Year, College Summit, America’s Promise Alliance and Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). All of us at First Book can relate to the Case Foundation’s focus on big, transformative ideas and their swing-for-the-fences approach.   Our programs support one big idea: all kids should grow up with books. More than 30 million American children live in low-income neighborhoods where there are few books to be found. First Book puts millions of brand-new, quality books into those children’s hands, and this generous contribution from the Case Foundation will help us reach thousands more kids. We are also committed to harnessing technology to yield transformative results. As much as we love books – actual physical books printed on real paper – we know that what matters most is what reading does for a child’s mind. It’s that connection with the world that is important, and as technologies change, we know that reading will change too. At First Book we’re determined to provide kids with great books – regardless of format – and we’re working with leaders like the Case Foundation to help us do that. So thank you to the Case Foundation for your support, and thank you to all the First Book fans who voted for us online. Together we’re helping millions of children become readers. Theresa Harnisch is the vice president of development for First Book. Keep up with First Book by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
