Washington, DC — September 18, 2014 – Today, the Case Foundation announced that Sheila Herrling will join the organization as the Senior Vice President for Social Innovation.

A senior executive with more than two decades of experience in international development and U.S. foreign policy, Sheila was most recently the Senior Vice President for Policy and Evaluation at the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), an independent U.S. foreign aid agency working to deliver smart foreign assistance in well-governed developing countries to improve the economic welfare of the world’s poor. There she led a staff of fifty policy and technical experts focusing on aid innovation and effectiveness, monitoring and evaluation, and economic analysis.

Ms. Herrling’s appointment is the culmination of a nationwide search and as the new Senior Vice President she will spearhead the Foundation’s Social Innovation team, which works collaboratively to develop and implement mission-driven domestic and international initiatives, partnerships and a robust portfolio of social and impact investments.

“Sheila is no stranger to taking big bets and she has consistently found ways to build coalitions for action to put fresh thinking into practice,” said Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation. “She will be a tremendous benefit to the foundation’s leadership team as we move forward with our impact investing initiatives, expand our tech for good platforms and support entrepreneurial approaches to social change. Sheila will carry on our mission to invest in people and ideas that are changing the world, and we’re delighted to welcome this world-class executive to the Case Foundation team.”

Before joining MCC, she was a senior policy director at the Center for Global Development (CGD), an independent, nonprofit policy research organization dedicated to reducing global poverty and inequality and making globalization work for the poor. Prior to CGD, Sheila served in senior management positions at the U.S. Department of Treasury, including deputy director of the office of development policy and adviser to the U.S. executive director of the African Development Bank. As a proven leader in her field, she also served as a senior advisor on the Obama administration’s foreign policy transition team

“This is an enormously exciting time for the Case Foundation and a tremendous opportunity to work with smart and committed people at a mission-driven organization,” said Herrling. “As a dedicated disruptor myself, I have long-followed the work of Jean and Steve Case, who have both played a pivotal role in countless causes and campaigns over the Foundation’s storied history. I look forward to carrying us into the next chapter.”

Herrling received her M.A. from American University’s School of International Service with a focus in International Development and Development Finance, and her B.A. in Economics from William Smith College.

Sheila succeeds Michael Smith, who departed the Case Foundation in 2013 to lead the Social Innovation Fund at the White House.
