Distinguished global executive to leverage public and private sector experience to lead expanded efforts to bring clean water to 10 million people; joins the Case Foundation as Chief International Officer

WASHINGTON, DC – In an effort to advance its efforts to bring clean drinking water to Africans, PlayPumps International U.S. today announced the appointment of Gary Edson as CEO. With a proven track record of experience in managing critical global and humanitarian challenges in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, Mr. Edson further strengthens the PlayPumps International U.S. management team which is committed to expanding and accelerating its efforts in working with the global water community to bring clean water to 10 million people in Africa.

In addition to serving as CEO of PlayPumps International U.S., Mr. Edson will also serve as Chief International Officer and Senior Vice President at the Case Foundation, which provides funding to PlayPumps International U.S. In this role, he will lead the development of international initiatives at the Foundation.

Mr. Edson previously served as Deputy National Security Advisor and Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs, where he co-led the development of the multi-billion dollar Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). In this role, he also established the Millennium Challenge Corporation to fight global poverty, and helped launch Water for the Poor, an initiative to make access to clean water a central aim of U.S. foreign assistance, and the African Education Initiative, an initiative to increase access to quality education opportunities. Mr. Edson has also served as senior advisor to both Malaria No More, an international effort to combat the number one killer of young children in Africa, and to the Special Olympics.

“We see reports on a daily basis confirming the need to address the global water crisis is now more urgent than ever,” said Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation and the Chair of PlayPumps International U.S. “Gary brings with him the spirit of entrepreneurship, collaboration and leadership that makes him the ideal executive to lead PlayPumps International U.S. as we accelerate and expand the PlayPumps initiative’s efforts to provide communities in Africa with access to clean water.”

The PlayPumps initiative focuses on installing innovative and sustainable water pumps that are powered by children at play. Installed near schools, the pumps both deliver clean drinking water to communities and provide a merry-go-round for children.

“The importance of bringing clean water to developing communities cannot be overstated,” said Gary Edson. “I’m both personally and professionally inspired by seeing what clean water can mean to children and families, and the opportunity to lead PlayPumps International U.S. is a tremendous opportunity to leverage my experience in working on humanitarian issues and community development that has been a thread throughout my career.”

Working closely with the global community, the PlayPumps global initiative has provided clean water to millions of people in five countries. Access to clean water in developing countries is a key pillar in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) established by the United Nations, acknowledging the link between the problems of poverty and lack of access to clean water. Amongst many other benefits, a clean water supply contributes to the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, enables communities to better achieve primary education, promotes gender equality, reduces child mortality and leads to overall improvement in health.

Under Mr. Edson’s leadership, PlayPumps International U.S. will focus on accelerating its efforts to help provide clean water to as many as 10 million people. In addition, PlayPumps International U.S. will focus on expanding its presence to additional countries, seeking additional partners and exploring new ways of providing access to clean water.

Mr. Edson comes to PlayPumps and the Case Foundation most recently from Stonebridge International, LLC, a global strategic advisory firm, where he served as managing director. Mr. Edson’s private sector experience includes positions leading ECG, Inc., a Chicago-based private equity firm, and serving as vice president of Equity Group Investments, Inc.
