A New Vision: The Corporation's Strategic Plan

David Eisner outlines the Corporation's new strategic plan.

We have four sets of goals.
  • One is in the broadest sense about Americans volunteering.  By 2010, we would like to see 10 million more Americans volunteering than the 65 million Americans who are volunteering today.  We think of that as our "10 by 10" initiative -- 10 million more Americans serving by 2010.   We know that we can't drive that through the Corporation alone, but we also know that if all of us who are connected to the Corporation -- including our partners in the private sector and non public and foundation sector -- push hard against this objective, America can achieve it.

  • The second goal we're focused on is around youth in disadvantaged circumstances.  First of all, we would like to see more service on their behalf, and as important, we would like to see more service by youth as an intervention to help them build greater success in their life.  Specifically, we are looking to see 3 million more mentors for youth by 2010 and 3 million more youth from disadvantaged circumstances serving in their communities by 2010.

  • The third goal is engaging the experience of the baby boomer generation.  This is the demographic bulge that is really going to change America as these people approach and pass the traditional age of retirement, and we want to see more of them dedicated to serving our communities, because we think that with this healthiest, best educated, largest generation in our history, striving with us and making our communities stronger, America can overcome some of its most intractable problems.  So our specific goal there is that we would like to see 28 million of them that's 3 million more baby boomers serving by the year 2010.

  • Then, finally, we believe that we can see dramatic improvements in our communities as well as in our culture of service if we do a better job engaging students.  On the college side, we think that America can move from having 3 million college students serving in their communities to having 5 million.  That is an increase of 2 million by 2010.  On the K 12 side, we believe we can move from having one third of American schools providing service-learning opportunities for their students to having half of America's schools providing service-learning opportunities by 2010.
