Black Girls Code's founder, Kimberly Bryant, was recently profiled in Inc. sharing how listening to her gut, despite what others advised her, was one of the best moves she ever made for her company. As both her story and the data shows, there’s a clear need for Black women founders but too often the entrepreneurial ecosystem fails to support them.

Looking at venture capital funding, startups with Black women founders have raised $494 million for the first half of 2021, surpassing the $287 million raised in all of 2020. However, that’s just a small sliver of the pie. Funding for women overall fell a percentage point last year from the not-so-soaring high of 3.4%.

What can we do to remove obstacles to let more changemakers like Kimberly Bryant flourish? In a recent Forbes article, leaders in the space shared solutions to the lack of diversity in startup funding. From the ability to participate remotely in accelerator programs to using data for accountability, there are lots of ways to continue the momentum.
