Preliminary tallies from #GivingTuesday and 92Y reveal national day of giving inspired more than 1.08 Million Total Gifts

December 2, 2015 — In its fourth year, the global day of charitable giving known as #GivingTuesday witnessed record-breaking participation, with more than $116.7 million raised online by 24 major donation-processing platforms, according to initial estimates released today by 92nd Street Y (92Y), based on data collection funded by the Case Foundation.

Charities received more than 1.08 million online contributions during the 24-hour period that began at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and continued until 11:59 p.m. According to the data, the mean gift amount donated by individuals was $107.47 and these gifts were made by a total of 698,961 donors. Those estimates are based on contributions tracked by 24 donation-processing platforms for nonprofits including: PayPal, Blackbaud, DonorPerfect, GlobalGiving, Network for Good, Razoo and more. For a complete list of platforms participating in the data collection project, visit www.givingtuesday.org/measurement.

“It’s great to see such positive results from online donations – this is truly a cause for celebration,” said Henry Timms, executive director of 92Y. “In addition, beyond these numbers, there are offline donations not measured here – as well as the impact of volunteer efforts; campaigns that encourage acts of kindness or donations of goods (like food and coats); classroom programs that are growing the next generation of philanthropists; and regional campaigns in towns, cities and states that generate civic pride and bring communities together around giving. All of those outcomes are equally important measures of success.”

“#GivingTuesday is a global movement inspiring millions across the globe to take a moment out of this busy holiday season to give to causes and organizations they care about,” said Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation. “With more than $116 million donated worldwide, this 24-hour online movement demonstrates the collective power of individuals who use their time, talent and treasure, both big and small, to launch a season of giving back to others that inspires us all.”

“On #GivingTuesday, charities worldwide raised $45.8 million through PayPal, well ahead of our goal to raise more than $19 million to break a Guinness World Records title for the most money raised online for charity in 24-hours. PayPal aspires to enable more and more charitable giving, and we are proud of the generosity of over half a million users who helped us reach this goal yesterday,” Franz Paasche, Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Communications, PayPal.

#GivingTuesday is largely driven by social media and online giving campaigns, demonstrating the popularity of online giving in recent years. Over the course of the day, more than 1.3 million social media mentions were related to #GivingTuesday on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, and 917,313 users were reached on Facebook, which tripled from 2014. The leading issues shared on social channels included education, environment, animals, healthcare, and international affairs.

#GivingTuesday is a global movement that engages individuals, businesses, communities and nonprofits to celebrate and encourage giving. Launched in 2012 by 92Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation and additional founding partners, #GivingTuesday annually promotes giving of all kinds at the beginning of the holiday season on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving. The 2015 #GivingTuesday data was collected and compiled by 92Y, with support from the Case Foundation. The data represents online donations made to U.S.-based nonprofits; it is a segment of all donations collected on #GivingTuesday. These are estimates and may be revised at a future date.
