Disclosure Regarding Collection and Use of Personal Information

Last Updated July 26, 2018

The Case Foundation (the “Foundation”) knows your privacy is important to you, and it is important to us too. This Privacy Policy explains the types of information we collect through casefoundation.org/ (the “Site”), how we will use it, and how we plan to protect that information once it is collected. Please review this Privacy Policy to make sure you understand how any personal information you provide us will be handled.

This Privacy Policy is a part of the terms and conditions which are set forth in our Terms of Use. Any capitalized terms that are not defined in this Privacy Policy have the meaning ascribed to them in the Terms of Use.

We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will let you know by posting the changed Privacy Policy on this page. In some cases, for example, if we make any significant changes, we may contact you directly about them, such as by sending you an email. Any changes will be effective immediately upon posting to the Site.

What information do we collect on the Site?

We collect two general types of information from Site users: (1) personal information that identifies or can be used to identify or contact an individual, and (2) nonpersonal information concerning the use of the Site.

  • Personal Information: Personal Information is information that would allow someone to contact or identify you, including, for example, your name, organization, address phone. The personal information we collect is limited to information you submit to us. For example, we may collect your name, email address, age, gender or other information you provide when you contact us through the Site. We may also collect names, home addresses, or other types of personal information from our investors and business partners to help verify that they are authorized to access the pages of the Site dedicated to them, if any such pages exist.
  • Nonpersonal Information: Nonpersonal information is data that does not identify you personally. As is the case with many websites, our servers automatically collect your browser type and Internet Protocol (“IP”) address (anonymized for residents of the European Economic Area) when you visit the Site. In addition, we may use standard tracking technologies (e.g., cookies, local shared objects, and pixel tags) and website analytics tools to monitor and better understand user behavior on the Site. Data captured may include, for example, the referring page that linked you to the Site, the country from which you are conducting your browsing session, the next website you visit when you leave the Site, and any search terms you have entered on the Site or a referral site.

How do we use your information?

We use the personal information you provide to us to provide the information you requested.  For example, when you sign up to be on one of our our email lists, we use your personal information to send you the information and updates that you asked us for.  We may also use personal information when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights or those of third parties, to protect your safety or the safety of others, to investigate fraud or other illegality, or to comply with a court order or other legal obligation.

We consider the personal information that we receive to be confidential. We will not use your personal information without your consent, except in accordance with this Privacy Policy.  We do not use personal information for any type of automated decisionmaking.

We use the nonpersonal information collected about Site visits, including the pages you view, information you search for, and the average time spent on the Site, in the aggregate to better understand our audience and increase the functionality and user-friendliness of the Site. Aggregate information is anonymous.

Sharing with third parties

We generally do not share personal information collected through the Site. We may, however, share your personal information (i) with trusted third parties who provide services to us, (ii) as required by law and when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights or those of third parties, to protect your safety or the safety of others, to investigate fraud or other illegality, or to comply with a court order or other legal obligation. .

Our operations and maintenance contractors sometimes have limited access to your personal information in the course of providing products or services to the Foundation. These contractors include vendors and suppliers that provide us with email distribution technology, services, or content for the operation and maintenance of the Site. Access to your personal information by these contractors is limited to the information reasonably necessary for the contractor to perform its limited function for the Foundation. We also contractually require that our operations and maintenance contractors (1) protect the privacy of your personal information consistent with this Privacy Policy, and (2) not use or disclose your personal information for any purpose other than providing us with products and services as required by law.

In addition, the third parties that support our website analytics tools may be able to view aggregate Site usage information that we obtain.

Security

While we endeavor to protect the security and integrity of Personal Information in our care, due to the inherent nature of the Internet as an open global communications vehicle, we cannot guarantee that any information, during transmission through the Internet or while stored on our system or otherwise in our care, will be absolutely safe from intrusion by others, such as hackers.

Links to third-party websites

The Site may contain links, banners, widgets, or advertisements that lead to other websites, including personal blogs written or edited by members of our staff. We are not responsible for these other websites, and so their privacy policies (not this Privacy Policy) will govern the collection and use of your information on them. We encourage you to read the privacy policies of those websites to understand how your information is treated there.

Cookies

To enhance your online experience with us, many of our web pages use “cookies.” Cookies are text files that our web server places on your hard disk to store your preferences. Cookies, by themselves, do not tell us your email address or other personal information unless you choose to provide this information to us. But, once you choose to provide the personal information, this information may be linked to the data stored in the cookie. Cookies cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your computer.

We use cookies as a convenience feature to save you time, to understand how the Site is used, and to improve the content and offering on the Site. For example, we may use cookies to personalize your experience at our webpages or recall your specific information on subsequent visits (e.g., to recognize you by name when you return to the Site). You can opt to have your browser reject cookies without any effect on your use of the Site. If you do that, you may need to re-register with us every time you visit the Site in order to participate in certain promotions. Companies that advertise on the Site (and their agents) might use their own cookies. This Privacy Policy does not cover how these companies use their cookies.

Google Analytics and Clicky Analytics

We use Google Analytics and Clicky Analytics to collect the following information when users access or interact with the Site: the browser and operating system you are using, the URL or advertisement that referred you to the Site, the search terms you entered into a search engine that led you to the Site, areas within the Site that you visited, and other information commonly shared when browsers communicate with websites. This information may also include x/y coordinates of mouse events, unique ID tracking cookie, IP address (anonymized for residents of the European Economic Area), unique device identifier (“Device Identifier”) for any device (computer, mobile phone, tablet, etc.). A Device Identifier is a number that is automatically assigned or connected to the device you use to access the Site, and our servers identify your device by its Device Identifier. Some mobile service providers may also provide us or our third-party service providers with information regarding the physical location of the device used to access the Site.

We use the information from Google Analytics and Clicky Analytics in order to assemble statistics regarding usage of the Site as well as to help us understand how users engage with the Site on an individual and aggregate basis in order to improve it; to help with customer service needs (such as troubleshooting issues that users report to us); and for research and analytical purposes such as service performance, customer behavior and common navigation through the Site. Google Analytics data is then fed into our Google AdWords account in order to help us monitor how our internet advertising is performing.

Opting out of remarketing, advertising and website tracking

If you do not wish to participate in our Google AdWords Remarketing, you can opt out by visiting Google’s Ads Preferences Manager at https://adssettings.google.com/. You can also opt out of any third-party vendor’s use of cookies by visiting https://www.networkadvertising.org/choices/. View the Clicky Analytics privacy policy page which provides additional details including the ability to opt of their analytics tracking: https://clicky.com/terms/privacy. To protect your privacy and security, we may take reasonable steps to help verify your identity before granting access or making corrections or deletions.

Transmission of information

The Site is operated in the United States, so information submitted to the Site will be transmitted to us in the United States. United States law may not provide the same level of data protection as does the law in other parts of the world. As noted above, we take steps to protect the information you provide to us, but we cannot guarantee that these measures will prevent a third party from unlawfully accessing this information. We also cannot guarantee that errors will not occur in the administration of the Site that could allow that information to be accessed.
