Instagram post 1862076839527535491_13712870 Being a #changemaker often means long days, often anywhere BUT the office. @TouchPointBmore is home base, and a unique space designed for radical #collaboration among #Baltimore #nonprofits looking to make change a reality in our city. Together with @threadinsta and @center_for_urban_families, community and corporate partners, we're working to put our city's collective interests above those of any single organization and break down the silos that too often keep us from being most effective in our work for #socialchange.

Instagram post 1861925605256467359_13712870 Talk about everyday #changemakers... these are the folks that inspire me. Facilitated by Program Manager Tamara Arnold, this #changemaker panel shared their wisdom with our new Fellows today at orientation. Founder of BOND: Building Our Nation's Daughters and co-host of @pointofhuepodcast, Ateira Griffin (@ms_amg18) is a @BaltimoreCorps alumna of #BCorpsCohort4. Alphonso Mayo is the founder of #Mentoring Mentors and worked with us as an executive-in-residence. Kim Trueheart (@trueheart4life) is a community activist and invaluable partner here in #Baltimore. Being an everyday changemaker is NOT something one does alone -- it can only be done successfully in #community. I'm so thankful for the ever-expanding Baltimore Corps network, dedicated to making systems-level change together.

Shortly after my fiancé and I got engaged, I moderated a keynote panel with the President of the T&Co Foundation around their company’s commitment towards sustainability and wildlife conservation - which is quite impressive! We had a great time chatting about the unique intersection of saving endangered elephants, luxury jewelry & conscious consumerism through their Save The Wild collection. Such a sweet treat for this Tuesday’s takeover! Cheers to the many ways that fashion can overlap with other social impact areas 🥂

Instagram post 1856141181764214518_13712870 Everyone can have an impact with their dollars. It’s not just impact investing that will make a difference, it is with each and every one of our purchases that we should consider what type of company we are supporting. Are the workers paid a fair wage? What are their factory conditions?
After making a few shifts in my own wardrobe, I have committed to only buying from companies that align with my values. My outfit in this picture for the #CaseTakeover portrays a few of my favorite ethical fashion brands: - Shirt: @amourvert USA-made, organic cotton, plants a tree for every t-shirt bought
- Skirt: @renttherunway a subscription model where I can rent something rather than buy new!
- Shoes: @matt_and_nat eco-friendly, vegan leather
- Earrings: @shopsoko - ethical jewelry made from sustainable materials in Kenya
- Sunglasses: @maiyet - luxury artisan handcrafted collections

Instagram post 1856905998493957690_13712870 To any caretaker of anybody or any community, remember that self-care is important. This line of work is exhausting and compassion-fatigue is real. So remember to take care of yourself and when you do, don't be hard on yourself.⁣
⁣
I'm not saying jump out a plane, but take time to expand your hobbies and do things that you enjoy.⁣
⁣
Thank you to my team and @socialworks_chi for allowing me to do work that I love and the Case Foundation for considering this joe-shmoe from 79th, on Chicago's Southside, as a millennial changemaker! #socialworkschi #socialworks #supportCPS

Instagram post 1856841419517258032_13712870 This is for the foundations, institutions, brands, and shot-callers! LET THE PEOPLE IN! Be comfortable opening the doors to the boardroom and being vulnerable to one's short-comings. It is only with this, can we work together to improve the quality of life for everyone.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For example, our New Chance: Arts & Literature Fund. A granting system we created with Chicago Public Schools & Ingenuity. We empower principals to create their vision schools. We've seen disciplinary rates decrease, graduation rates increase, attendance increase, science labs constructed, and so many classes implemented bell-to-bell.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Without CPS' willingness to allow a conversation with SocialWorks none of this would be possible. And look, a year later we've raised $4M for the students of Chicago and inspired tons to get involved. From kindergartners, small businesses, law firms, the Chicago Bulls, Jewel Osco, Google, and SOOOO many people we've been able to begin to rewrite the narrative and give kids what they deserve. AND IT ALL STARTED WITH A CONVERSATION WITH 20-something-year-olds!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So lets rejoice in the next generation's ideas and know that it could be an opportunity for endless possibility. #supportCPS

Instagram post 1856764306273015810_13712870 And that's what we do at SocialWorks. We've all been the graphic designer, custodian, truck driver, volunteer, or whatever it takes to put ourselves in a position to gain trust within Chicago. All with the intention of inspiring people to do what they can to help. We develop our programming off positivity, leadership, and inclusiveness and reinvigorating community institutions like churches and libraries, which build a community, based in heart and hustle.⁣
⁣
Without the companies, brands, and PEOPLE there would be no SocialWorks. This relationship reminds me of one of my favorite Andre 3000 verses.⁣
⁣
"If it don't move your feet then I don't eat so we like neck-to-neck⁣
Yes, we done come a long way like them slim-ass cigarettes⁣
From Virginia, this ain't gon' stop, so we just gon' continue"⁣
⁣
This speaks to that relationship. We LOVE the work we do. If you give us an inch we'll turn it into sustainability and impact. So if you don't know what to do in this climate, volunteer, donate, inspire others, or do whatever it takes to pass the love and it will come back 50-fold. SocialWorks and a lot of dope organizations need it and are counting on it.

He's an individual that's committed himself to serving the homeless for the last 5 years! He is a servant-leader and has inspired tons of people to donate through him and volunteer. The work that we all do as Change Makers DOESN'T WORK WITHOUT PEOPLE PLUGGING IN!Michael has done a phenomenal job being the change that people want to see and allowing himself to be that extension of the people.

People who have empowered others to feel bigger than themselves and, most importantly, plug-in. These people are pretty cliche but have done nothing less than set the standard and are still very important. I see a lot of millennials doing the same thing, creating change from the bottom-up and top-down, and it motivates me and @socialworks_chi team.⁣⁣

Instagram post 1855340550929410198_13712870 It's all about perspective. As we grow up, we get jaded, look for excuses, and often overanalyze and overcomplicate.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes you just have to look at that to do list and remind yourself "it's just 4 things" and GO FOR IT!DREAMS DON'T COME TRUE.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
GOALS COME TRUE. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Leading the Count Me In Movement and scaling it into a global brand has taught me that “making things happen” is a 3-step process:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ Dream big.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ Turn that Dream into a Goal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣ Find at least one person to hold you accountable, put a plan into action, and follow through.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most people never leave the dream stage. They have big ideas but they don't write them down, and take action.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Never stop dreaming. Dream hard. Dream BIG. But remember that dreams don't come true. Goals do.

Over the weekend we worked with volunteers and partners in various events on the ground to help with voter registration efforts. Young #Latinx have the power to create a more inclusive democracy. Don’t believe those who say youth engagement can’t make a difference.
Over 27 million Latinx are eligible to vote in this election ✌️✌️✌️✌️and over 60% are under age 33 🙋🏽! This is your time… Juntos #SomosMas ¡Gracias! - @mariateresakumar

I’ve been working over a decade to empower #latinx #milennials and every day I’m inspired by the power of change that exists in our community. I founded @votolatino with @rosariodawson because I truly believe that young #Latinx have the power to create a stronger and more inclusive democracy. L At @votolatino, we are fundamentally aware that young #Latinx are the new builders and makers in this country. But to reach that potential, there has to be some level of access and opportunity. This is why @votolatino exists: to provide a roadmap for young #Latinx to become leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, and really anything else they deem possible.

*Fiver yeas later (I graduated last May)...SOA has built the world’s largest network of young ocean leaders - through establishing a presence in over 62 countries, launching the first-ever Ocean Solutions Accelerator to support start-ups, and partnering with corporations such as Lindblad Expeditions and The Economist, NGOs, and governments, including Indonesia and the European Union, to develop technological solutions that can address the greatest threats facing our planet. *

Instagram post 1860557577155749326_13712870 I love food but I love cooking hearty meals to share with my family and friends even more. There’s nothing quite like ending a day or long weekend cooking in the kitchen with my partner Lamour, our family and the friends who light up our lives. I grew up in New England in a house with my grandmother from North Carolina. I came home to home cooked soul food everyday and learned how to merge fresh flavors by watching her and the cook at my local boys and girls club, Momma Morgan. I love to combine those rich southern flavors with the freshness and tanginess of my favorite Asian and Caribbean dishes and serve up huge quantities - because you never know who might join!

We push each other to be our very best, often with passionate debates. We work hard and play hard - as you can see at these work and after work pictures. One of my mentors, Valerie Jarrett, was recently speaking to a group of Congressional Black Caucus Fellows that we brought to our offices. She reminded them of the importance of building relationships and never forgetting the humanity of the people we have the privilege to work with. Instagram post 1860363038222475135_13712870 A few years back I realized the first thing I did every morning was grab my Blackberry from my nightstand to check and respond to my constant flurry of e-mails - yep, I had my first Blackberry in 2003 and then again during my last couple of years working at the White House! I hated that I was starting my day immediately getting on the hamster wheel and not getting off until late at night. I decided then I needed to make a change and start by centering myself with purpose and prayer. So, while I’ve kept the habit of reaching for my night stand, each day when I open my eyes I reach for my iPhone and read a couple daily devotions and scriptures before I allow myself to catch up on the latest news and then the never-ending emails that came in overnight. Everything seems a little smaller and a little more manageable after focusing on what really matters. And then, most days I get in the car and talk to my amazing mom who can talk me off most ledges and give me the inspiration, guidance and grounding I need to take on the world! She was a fearless single mom who sacrificed constantly so I might have opportunities she never dreamed of.

Instagram post 1860290794783776010_13712870 Hey, my name is Michael Smith. I’m a proud brother, uncle, God parent, partner, son of teen parents from a low income neighborhood, cross-sector activist from the inside out and Case Foundation alumni. I’m thrilled to take over today! Currently I’m Executive Director of My Brother's Keeper (MBK) Alliance and Director of Youth Opportunity Programs at the Obama Foundation. I have the privilege to work everyday to help build a national movement to ensure nothing stands in the way of boys and young men of color from achieving their dreams. Prior to the Obama Foundation I had the honor to serve in President Obama’s White House as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director of Cabinet Affairs for the MBK Initiative. I helped create MBK when I was Director of the Social Innovation Fund at the federal agency that runs AmeriCorps. Before joining the Obama Administration I spent nearly eight amazing years at the Case Foundation, most recently as SVP of Social Innovation. While there we helped launch a new age of democratized philanthropy, new approaches to civic engagement, international public private partnerships, a national initiative to spark high growth entrepreneurship and the Be Fearless initiative to encourage more innovation and risk taking in the social sector. My colleague Kari Dunn Saratovsky launched our Social Citizen work at that time, which was the beginning of more than 10 years of exciting campaigns and research helping to understand and engage the amazing millennial generation. And just like then, I continue to argue with Kari and others that since I was born in December of ‘79 I’m not really a Millennial! I’m right on the cusp but definitely identify more with the concept of the Oregon Trail generation! Either way, what an exciting time to be part of social change movements when technology, sector conversions, rapid changes in demographics and an ever shrinking globe is giving us the ability to tackle old challenges in all sorts of new and exciting ways!

Instagram post 1859146505194319663_13712870 I invited a few local families to my home to talk about what kindness means to them and how they’re planning to keep it going all year. Open, honest, and ongoing conversations within families are so important. Read the link in bio on @CynthiaBTWF's page for one example of what this can look like - and some helpful tips! - that she shared with @TheMightySite. The best boss and inspiration! #BeKind21 #BeKind

Instagram post 1858911622501086081_13712870 Couldn't be prouder to bring our #BeKind21 challenge to my son's school, Springhill Elementary. Wanting my son to start school in an environment that encourages him to be kind to himself and to others sparked the inspiration behind our challenge. Instagram post 1859892536508997275_13712870 Launching your product is one of the BEST moments of founding a startup! As a founder, I’m always trying to listen to our users — they have the most important insights and have guided our path at @realworldplaybook since the start.
After 1000+ interviews with students, schools, employers, and other stakeholders, we designed the Real World Ready program — a comprehensive online course that introduces young adults to everything from personal finance and health care to renters insurance and taxes.
We are so excited to launch this program next week at schools across the country, and help make the next generation #realworldready ✌🏻 A big thank you to the Case Foundation and @jeancasecf for giving founders the encouragement and support they need to take big bets, fail forward, and get in the arena! #CaseTakeover

Instagram post 1859703829604662795_13712870 Failure can be frustrating, but when it comes to the real world, we’re all about sharing #realworldfails.
Earlier this summer, @realworldplaybook collaborated with @spoonuniversity to showcase real world fails and wins with the Spoon community. From forgetting to sign up for health insurance to wearing jeans to an interview, these fails showed that everyone makes mistakes when they start out.
As we’ve built the Real World community, we’ve come to realize that peer influence is so important! Navigating the real world on your own can be stressful and scary— it’s a lot easier when you have a team, and feel like you’re working through it together!✌🏻

Instagram post 1859646476909866999_13712870 Hi everyone! I’m Genevieve Ryan and am so excited to participate in the #CaseTakeover! I’m the founder of @realworldplaybook - we provide tools and trusted resources to navigate the “real world”. I’m a lawyer by background and founded our company after struggling with my own real world transition - despite being blessed with incredible educational opportunities, I was totally unprepared when it came to things like personal finance, health insurance, and taxes.
At Real World Playbook, we are on a mission to make adulthood easier, and are building a community to help twenty-somethings make smart, informed decisions about their lives.
Join us as we make the next generation #realworldready ✌🏻
