18 Leaders in the Open Source Community to Follow on Twitter

Open source is an essential tool for the tech community, providing open and accessible platforms for accomplishing everything from building websites to artificial intelligence. Yet the drivers behind open source are often individuals, and their commitments of time, energy and inspiration are truly an act of personal philanthropy; many players in the movement do it on their own time.

We talked about how open source can accelerate social good last month in SSIR, and increasingly, open source is critical for nonprofits and individuals who may not have the funds to build out software from scratch or license expensive and cumbersome enterprise software.

At the Case Foundation, we’re committed to contributing to the open source community and recognizing others who are doing so too. These 18 people have made a personal commitment to sharing their digital work with the online community. Learn more about them and how you can follow their work on Twitter below.

Join the 2017 MCON Speakers on Twitter

The count-down has begun, and we’re less than one week from the kick off of the annual Millennial Engagement conference. MCON has become the marquee event on millennial cause engagement, and we’re thrilled to have it hosted again in our own back yard in Washington, DC. For more on the event, check out our recent MCON2017 blog post.

As in years past, MCON is assembling a list of can’t-miss speakers that represent a multi-industry approach to doing good for our communities and our environment. From filmmakers, to artists and actors, to activists, to chefs and restaurateurs, the MCON speakers—like the audience—is a gathering of diverse people who care about social change and want to #GetInTheArena by turning their interests into action.

We’re sharing our Twitter list of MCON speakers to make joining the online conversation using #MCON easy for everyone. Whether you’re here at MCON (registration is still open) or joining via the livestream. Be sure to follow along as we share event highlights, quotes, photos and more at @CaseFoundation using hashtag #GetInTheArena.

34 Organizations Building Social Capital for Diverse Entrepreneurs to Follow on Twitter

Accelerator. Incubator. Ecosystem Builder. Social Capital. These words are commonly used in the startup world, but can feel like jargon to those unfamiliar with the entrepreneurship space. They describe the partners and resources that are essential in an entrepreneur’s journey—mentors, education and connections that help founders succeed. Harvard Kennedy School refers to social capital as “the collective value of all ‘social networks’ (who people know) and the inclinations that arise from these networks to do things for each other (‘norms of reciprocity’).” Basically, social capital ensures that you are connected to the right people who will provide you with trusted information, collaboration and partnerships. Social capital is particularly important when an entrepreneur is just starting out and needs advisors who have been there before and connections to funders who are willing to work with them to build a business.

At the Case Foundation, we believe that the next era of entrepreneurship is about leveling the playing field, expanding participation and scaling the networks of social, financial and inspiration capital that provide the foundation for successful startups and scalable business. We partner with social capital networks providing important connections, training and mentorships for entrepreneurs, as well as the investors and influencers working to change the way capital flows to diverse entrepreneurs. Incubators for those just starting out, accelerators for those looking to grow and the ecosystem builders generally paving the way for entrepreneurs to succeed.

All entrepreneurs have similar needs—mentorship, funding, role models—but not all entrepreneurs have equal access to those resources. We see disproportionate funding going to white male entrepreneurs and underrepresentation of women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs of color in most major incubator and accelerator programs. When only a portion of the entrepreneurship community has access to the stepping stones needed to grow their business, it’s no wonder most of the breakout companies we laud in our society are founded by white men. To combat this trend, we have committed to catalyzing the inclusive entrepreneurship movement and launched #FacesofFounders to shed more light on the diverse entrepreneurs scaling businesses and important conversations around inclusive entrepreneurship we must have to change how our culture views entrepreneurship.

Fortunately, more and more entrepreneurship programs are being set up with intentionality around creating on-ramps for women entrepreneurs or entrepreneurs of color. Whether it’s a network for women only or an existing accelerator that has benchmarks for inclusion among its cohort, entrepreneurship supporters are getting serious about providing the resources diverse founders need to be successful.

To learn more about these inclusion-focused accelerators, incubators and ecosystem builders, we’ve put together a list to get you started. These organizations are committed to the inclusive entrepreneurship movement, taking action within their organizations to support diverse entrepreneurs and leaders in the field demonstrating the value of providing underrepresented groups of entrepreneurs with access to capital, networks and support. We are proud to be working to advance inclusive entrepreneurship alongside these organizations and the many more out there committed to this work!

50 Inclusive Entrepreneurship Champions You Should Be Following on Twitter

Earlier this week our CEO Jean Case shared the Case Foundation’s journey from understanding our work through the lens of our three pillars, or our main areas of interest, to distilling the core of what we do—catalyze movements around social innovation, tipping the scales from good intention to action.

As movement catalyzers, we are not creating a new program or issue area at the Foundation, but rather, are joining in and accelerating a movement that already has purpose, stakeholders and allies. For our newest movement around inclusive entrepreneurship, we have pulled up a seat at a table already populated with the inspiring entrepreneurs, savvy investors and dedicated ecosystem builders who seek to level the playing field for women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs of color. Together, we are working to upend the bleak statistics regarding access to financial capital, risk tolerance and the cultural barriers faced by diverse entrepreneurs and create a new system that allows all individuals with innovative ideas to have access to the resources necessary to build, grow and scale their business.

In an effort to lift up these varied voices, ecosystem builders and entrepreneurs leading the inclusive entrepreneurship movement, we’ve curated a list of 50 inclusive entrepreneurship champions you should be following on Twitter. We know that this list is in no way exhaustive of the many incredible people doing work in this sector, but we hope this will give you a starting point to understand and join in the quest to create a level playing field for all entrepreneurs. If you want to shine a spotlight on others supporting this ecosystem, please let us know on Twitter using @CaseFoundation and the hashtag #Ent4All.
